Monotube and Twin-Tube Dampers
Monotube and twin-tube dampers are hydraulic damper constructions distinguished by how their working and compensation chambers are arranged.
Main forms
- Monotube: the working piston moves in one cylinder. A separating piston normally divides the oil from a pressurized gas chamber, which accommodates the volume of the entering piston rod and helps suppress aeration.
- Twin-tube: the working piston moves inside an inner tube, while an outer tube forms a reservoir. Oil displaced by the piston rod passes through a base valve into that compensation space.
How the designs differ
A monotube can use a larger working piston for a given outer diameter and has a direct heat path through the cylinder wall. It also needs space for the gas chamber and may require protection against stone damage. A twin-tube can use lower gas pressure and compact packaging, but its oil path, heat rejection, and sensitivity to installation angle differ.
Neither construction automatically determines comfort, handling, or durability. Valve design, gas pressure, oil volume, piston area, seals, temperature control, and calibration remain decisive.
