Magnetorheological Dampers

Magnetorheological dampers are semi-active dampers that use fluid containing magnetically responsive particles and an electromagnetically controlled flow passage.

How the fluid changes

When the magnetic field changes, the particles form structures that increase the fluid’s resistance to flow through the damper. The controller can therefore vary damping force quickly without a conventional moving proportional valve. BWI Group’s MagneRide is a production implementation of this principle.

The damper remains semi-active. It changes resistance to existing suspension motion but cannot apply an arbitrary force like a powered actuator, and its output remains limited by shaft velocity, available current, magnetic circuit, fluid temperature, and the damper’s force envelope.

Magnetorheological technology describes how the variable damping force is produced, not the complete suspension strategy. Sensors, body-motion estimation, control software, springs, tyres, geometry, and drive-mode calibration determine how the vehicle uses that capability. A wider force range can help engineers separate comfort-oriented wheel response from stronger body control, but it does not remove the underlying physical trade-offs.
