Laminated and Tempered Safety Glass
Laminated and tempered safety glass are two distinct automotive glazing constructions with different structures and breakage behavior.
Main forms

- Tempered glass, called toughened glass in UN Regulation No. 43, is a single glass layer specially treated to increase its mechanical strength and control its fragmentation after shattering. UNECE: UN Regulation No. 43 — Safety glazing
Lamination describes a multi-layer assembly, while tempering describes treatment of a glass ply. UN Regulation No. 43 also recognizes treated laminated glass, so the labels are not always mutually exclusive at component level. UNECE: UN Regulation No. 43 — Safety glazing
How the terms differ
The names do not rank one construction as universally stronger or safer. Pane position, approval requirements, optical quality, occupant retention, repairability, security, and emergency escape all affect the choice. One vehicle can use both constructions, and front and rear side windows may differ, so each pane should be identified from its marking or the manufacturer's information.
The distinction becomes critical during emergency escape. In AAA testing, several tools broke tempered side-window samples, but none penetrated the laminated samples.
