Keyless Start
Keyless start, also marketed under names such as Keyless Go, lets the driver enable the vehicle without inserting a mechanical key. The car electronically verifies an authorized key fob, phone, or other credential before allowing the propulsion system to become ready.
How it works
The credential and vehicle exchange a short-range wireless challenge. If authentication succeeds and required conditions are met, the driver can press a start button or use another control to activate the car. In an EV, “start” normally means making the high-voltage propulsion system ready rather than cranking an engine.
Keyless start is not necessarily the same as passive keyless entry. A vehicle may require a button press to unlock but still offer keyless start, or it may support passive entry as well.
What to check
Check the backup procedure for a flat fob or phone battery, where the emergency reader is located, and how clearly the vehicle indicates that it is ready or switched off. NHTSA notes that layouts and driver alerts vary between models. NHTSA: Keyless Ignition Systems
