Keyless Entry
Keyless entry lets a vehicle be unlocked without inserting a mechanical key into a lock. The term covers several different access systems.
Remote and passive systems
Remote keyless entry requires the user to press a button on a key fob or device. Passive keyless entry detects an authorized credential nearby and can unlock when a handle is touched or the user approaches. The credential may be a radio key fob, smartphone, watch, or smart card.
Keyless entry does not automatically include keyless start, walk-away locking, digital key sharing, or remote access through an app. Those are separate functions whose availability and security depend on the implementation. A vehicle may also keep a hidden mechanical key and emergency lock even when normal access is electronic.
Proximity systems should verify more than the mere presence of a relayed radio signal. Newer digital-key designs can use secure authentication and distance-aware technologies, but capabilities differ by vehicle and device.
