Integrated Electric Drive Unit (EDU)
An integrated electric drive unit (EDU) is an assembly that packages several electric-propulsion functions in one physical unit.
Main forms
The narrowest common boundary combines a traction motor with a Reduction Gear. More integrated products can add the inverter, differential, parking lock, cooling and lubrication circuits, pumps, sensors, and control electronics.
An E-Axle is an integrated drive intended to supply an axle, but the terms are not interchangeable in every supplier catalogue. “Electric drive unit,” “e-drive module,” “integrated drive unit,” and “e-axle” are commercial and engineering labels rather than standardized lists of included components.
Why the boundary matters
Integration can shorten electrical connections and share housings, cooling, lubrication, and controls. It can also make quoted mass, power density, and efficiency difficult to compare. One figure may cover only motor and gears, while another includes the inverter, differential, fluids, and control hardware.
