Head Restraint and Whiplash Protection

Last modified: Aug 05, 2026

Head restraint and whiplash protection are related but not interchangeable. A head restraint supports the head relative to the torso; whiplash protection depends on its geometry and on how the complete seat responds in a rear impact.

What ratings measure

Dynamic tests assess head-and-spine support, head-restraint contact, neck loading, and seat energy management. Size or an “anti-whiplash” label alone cannot establish protection. See Child Restraints and Seat Safety and Car Seats in EVs: Safety, Comfort, Packaging, and Technology.
