Front Cross-Traffic Alert (FCTA)
Front cross-traffic alert (FCTA) warns about road users approaching across the vehicle’s path from the left or right, particularly when emerging slowly from a junction, driveway, or parking exit with restricted visibility.
What it does
The function uses forward- or corner-facing radar, cameras, or a sensor combination to identify supported crossing targets and estimate whether their paths conflict. It normally presents a directional visual and audible warning. Some vehicles add automatic braking, but that intervention should be distinguished from the alert itself.
Buildings, parked vehicles, vegetation, sensor obstruction, weather, target speed, and unusual intersection geometry can reduce detection or shorten warning time. Coverage and supported road users vary by implementation. FCTA cannot confirm that an intersection is clear, so the driver must look both ways and remain ready to stop.
