Digital Key
Digital key is an electronic vehicle-access credential stored on a compatible device such as a smartphone, smartwatch, or smart card. Depending on the implementation, it can authorize locking, unlocking, starting, and sharing access.
A credential, not just an app command
A standardized digital key can be provisioned to protected device hardware and checked cryptographically by the vehicle. Owners may be able to share a key, restrict permissions, or revoke it without handing over a physical key. Remote control through a manufacturer app is related but is not always the same as storing a local vehicle credential.
Current systems can combine several radio technologies. NFC supports deliberate tap-based access; Bluetooth Low Energy supports discovery, communication, and authentication; UWB can add accurate distance measurement for hands-free access. The exact combination varies by vehicle, device, region, and software version.
Compatibility is not universal. A phone model, operating-system version, account, connectivity setup, or initial pairing procedure may be required.
