Digital Instrument Cluster
A digital instrument cluster is an electronic display in the driver's primary instrument area. It replaces or supplements mechanical gauges and warning lamps with software-rendered speed, range, energy, navigation, driver-assistance, and vehicle-status information.
How it differs from the center screen
The cluster is positioned for essential driving information and regulated telltales. A center infotainment screen usually handles broader navigation, media, comfort, and settings tasks. The two may share computing resources or visual themes, but the cluster needs predictable startup, brightness, warning priority, and failure behavior.
Configurability and resilience
Digital clusters can change layouts by drive mode, show maps, and prioritize contextual warnings. That flexibility requires disciplined information design: critical speed, gear, readiness, fault, and assistance states must remain clear even when optional content changes.
Buyers should check readability in sunlight and darkness, steering-wheel obstruction, available layouts, map support, update behavior, and what remains visible if the infotainment system restarts. Screen size alone does not describe usability.
