Crumple Zone

Last modified: Aug 05, 2026

A crumple zone is part of a vehicle structure designed to deform progressively, absorbing and redirecting crash energy away from the occupant compartment. This controlled deformation lengthens the vehicle’s deceleration, helping reduce loads on occupants while the safety cell preserves survival space.

EVs

In an EV, load paths must also protect the traction battery; a Structural Battery Pack is not automatically a crumple zone. See Structural Safety Systems for the system.
