Charging Power

Last modified: Aug 02, 2026

Charging power is the instantaneous rate at which electrical energy is transferred during charging, expressed in kilowatts (kW). It describes what is happening at a particular moment, not how much energy has been added.

What limits the power

Electrical power is the product of voltage and current. The power that reaches or is accepted by an EV can still be lower than a charger's advertised rating because the supply, charging station, cable, connector, vehicle electronics and battery each have operating limits. The lowest active limit governs the session at that moment.

Charging power should not be confused with energy, which is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A power reading also does not show how long that level is maintained. Peak charging power identifies the highest point, while average charging power describes performance across a defined interval.
