CHAdeMO

CHAdeMO is a DC fast-charging system that combines a dedicated coupler with communication and control rules between the vehicle and charging equipment. The established passenger-vehicle implementation uses CAN communication to coordinate the DC current supplied to the battery system.

More than the connector

The visible CHAdeMO connector is only one part of the system. A charging session also depends on the vehicle inlet, cable, electrical ratings, safety functions, communication, charger power electronics, and the vehicle's battery limits.

During charging, the external equipment converts grid power and supplies controlled DC. The vehicle communicates its permitted voltage and current as conditions change. The power printed on a charger or allowed by a protocol version is therefore not a promise that every compatible vehicle will receive that power. Battery temperature, state of charge, voltage, and the limits of both vehicle and charger can reduce it.

CHAdeMO protocol revisions have added capabilities while retaining compatibility goals for the established interface. ChaoJi, associated with CHAdeMO 3.x development, uses a different high-power physical interface. It should not be treated as another name for the familiar CHAdeMO passenger-car connector.

CHAdeMO is likewise not a generic name for DC Fast Charging. CCS and J3400 are separate DC systems with different interfaces and communication arrangements. See EV Charging Connectors and Inlets for the wider connector comparison.
