Camera-Based Driver Assistance

Camera-based driver assistance uses one or more vehicle cameras as a primary input for functions that interpret the road or the area around the vehicle.

What cameras contribute

Camera images contain color, texture, edges, lane markings, traffic lights, signs, and object appearance. Software can use these patterns for lane support, sign recognition, object classification, driver warnings, braking assistance, or parking views.

The label does not necessarily mean camera-only. A camera-based function may also use radar, ultrasonic sensors, maps, or vehicle-motion data through sensor fusion. Conversely, a camera-only architecture has to derive range, motion, and scene confidence without an independent sensing modality.

Performance depends on camera placement, field of view, calibration, image quality, training data, and software. Darkness, glare, fog, rain, snow, lens contamination, occlusion, and unusual road markings can reduce the usable evidence.
