Braked and Unbraked Towing Capacity
Braked and unbraked towing capacities are separate trailer-mass limits based on whether the trailer has an effective service-brake system.
Braked towing capacity
A braked trailer contributes braking force through its own approved system. This normally permits a higher trailer-mass rating, but the actual limit still depends on the vehicle, hitch, trailer, combination rating, and local law.
Unbraked towing capacity
An unbraked trailer relies primarily on the tow vehicle for service braking and therefore normally has a much lower permitted mass. A trailer's parking or breakaway device does not automatically make it a braked trailer for the relevant rating.
Both figures are maximum permissions under defined conditions, not interchangeable performance claims. The trailer's actual laden mass must stay within its applicable rating. Vehicle payload, axle loads, towball download, tyre limits, and driver-licence rules may reduce what can legally or safely be used.
