Battery Passport
A battery passport is an electronic record that links regulated model and lifecycle information to an individual battery.
What the EU rule covers
Under the EU Batteries Regulation, every EV battery placed on the EU market or put into service from 18 February 2027 must have a battery passport. It is accessed through a QR code linked to a unique identifier. The record contains battery-model information and data specific to the individual battery, while access to some information is restricted by role.
More than a label or health report
The QR code is the access point, not the passport itself. A State of Health value can be one part of the record, but the passport is not merely a battery-health report, service record, warranty, or physical label. See State of Health (SoH) for the limits of a single health estimate.
The regulation also requires a new, linked passport after preparation for reuse, repurposing, or remanufacturing. The passport ceases to exist after the battery has been recycled.
