Automotive Bluetooth Profiles
Automotive Bluetooth profiles are standardized sets of roles and behaviors that let a phone and vehicle agree on a specific Bluetooth function. Pairing two devices does not guarantee every feature: both sides must support compatible profiles, versions, permissions, and implementations.
Common profiles in cars
- HFP (Hands-Free Profile): two-way call and voice audio.
- A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile): higher-quality streamed audio, normally from phone to car.
- AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile): playback controls and media metadata.
- PBAP (Phone Book Access Profile): contacts and call-history access.
- MAP (Message Access Profile): supported message exchange and notifications.
- PAN (Personal Area Networking Profile): network connectivity between devices.

Compatibility and privacy
A phone can allow calls but deny contacts or messages. Codec support, profile versions, phone software, vehicle updates, regional settings, and multi-device priorities can also change behavior. A vehicle may use Bluetooth for basic audio while relying on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth together for wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Owners should review requested permissions and remove paired devices and imported personal data when selling, renting, or sharing a car. Troubleshooting should distinguish radio pairing from the particular profile that failed.
