Automated Lane Change
Automated lane change is a driver-assistance function that carries out a lateral move into an adjacent lane after a driver request or, in some systems, after the system proposes the maneuver and the driver confirms it. It is intended for roads and conditions within the feature’s defined operating range.
What it does
The system evaluates lane markings and nearby traffic using cameras, radar, or other sensors. If it considers the target lane available, it controls steering through the lane change and may coordinate speed. Activation steps, driver confirmation, and whether passing is supported differ between vehicles and markets.
Sensor coverage does not guarantee that the lane is clear. Fast-approaching traffic, motorcycles, poor markings, weather, roadworks, and unusual road geometry can limit detection. The driver must monitor the maneuver and be ready to cancel or take over. Automated lane change alone does not make a vehicle self-driving.
