Apple CarPlay and CarPlay Ultra
Apple CarPlay is a driving-oriented iPhone projection system that presents supported phone apps and services through a compatible vehicle's displays, audio, microphones, and controls. CarPlay Ultra is Apple's more deeply integrated generation, capable of supplying content across driver displays and interacting with supported vehicle functions.
Conventional CarPlay
CarPlay relies on a compatible iPhone and can work through USB or a supported wireless connection. It provides approved experiences for navigation, audio, messaging, calls, and other limited app categories. Vehicle hardware can include touch, knobs, buttons, voice input, instrument-cluster guidance, or HUD guidance.
CarPlay Ultra
CarPlay Ultra remains dependent on the driver's iPhone but can extend the Apple-designed experience to the instrument cluster and additional screens. Apple states that it can combine phone content with vehicle information and controls, while built-in vehicle systems continue to power driving features. Apple Developer: CarPlay
This is not simply ordinary CarPlay stretched over a larger display. The automaker must integrate and support the Ultra architecture for the specific vehicle. Availability, layouts, vehicle controls, phone requirements, regions, and update paths therefore vary.
What to check
Check whether support is wired or wireless, which displays can be used, whether navigation guidance reaches the cluster or HUD, how multiple drivers connect, and which functions remain available without the phone. CarPlay and CarPlay Ultra are projection experiences, not the car's embedded operating system.
