Android Automotive OS, Google Built-In, and Google Automotive Services
Android Automotive OS (AAOS) is an Android-based operating system that runs directly on a vehicle's hardware. Google built-in is the customer-facing description used for vehicles that combine AAOS with licensed Google apps and services, while Google Automotive Services (GAS) is the underlying optional package of those Google components.
Three related but different terms
- AAOS is the embedded base platform. It can be customized by a vehicle manufacturer and can exist without Google apps.
- GAS is a separately licensed collection that can include Google Maps, Google Play, Google Assistant or Gemini, and related services.
- Google built-in tells buyers that the vehicle includes the integrated Google experience; it is not another operating system.
Google's current developer documentation says vehicles with Google built-in run AAOS, but AAOS vehicles do not all need the same apps, services, hardware, interface, or update policy. Android Developers: Android Automotive OS overview
Not Android Auto
Android Auto is a phone-projection system. AAOS applications are installed on and run in the car; Android Auto applications primarily run through a connected Android phone. A vehicle can support both at the same time.
What varies by vehicle
Manufacturers control system design, vehicle integration, available app categories, accounts, data permissions, update delivery, and support periods. Google services may require connectivity and an account, while some embedded vehicle functions can work offline. Buyers should check which services are standard, subscription-based, region-limited, or supported for a stated period.
