Active, Passive, and Post-Crash Safety
Last modified: Aug 05, 2026
Active, passive, and post-crash safety describe when vehicle protection acts. Active safety helps the driver retain control or avoid a collision, including Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Timing
Passive safety uses the structure and restraints to limit injury during impact; see Structural Safety Systems. Post-crash safety supports escape, rescue, emergency communication, and hazard isolation. In an EV, that includes disconnecting the High-Voltage System when required. The complete framework is covered in Safety.
