Fisker Inc. was founded in 2016 by Danish-American automotive designer Henrik Fisker, who had previously led the design of iconic cars like the BMW Z8 and Aston Martin DB9. The company went public via a SPAC merger in 2020 amid the EV startup boom, raising significant capital with promises of delivering an affordable, sustainable electric SUV that would challenge established automakers.

The Fisker Ocean, the company's first and ultimately only production vehicle, began deliveries in mid-2023. The Ocean was manufactured by Magna Steyr in Austria and offered attractive specifications on paper, including competitive range, a solar roof option, and a striking design. However, the vehicle was plagued by significant software problems, quality control issues, and a lack of a functioning dealer and service network, leading to poor customer experiences and mounting negative reviews.

Throughout late 2023 and early 2024, Fisker's financial situation deteriorated rapidly. The company struggled with low sales volumes, high cash burn, supply chain difficulties, and an inability to resolve the Ocean's software issues quickly enough. Attempts to secure additional funding and strategic partnerships failed to materialize, and the company's stock price plummeted from its earlier highs.

In June 2024, Fisker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, effectively ending the company's operations. The remaining Ocean inventory was sold at steep discounts through bankruptcy proceedings. Fisker's failure serves as a cautionary tale about the challenges facing EV startups — even with strong design and initial consumer interest, the complexities of vehicle manufacturing, software development, and building a sustainable business model proved insurmountable without adequate execution and capital.

Fisker Inc. was founded in 2016 by designer Henrik Fisker, aiming to revive the dream of stylish and sustainable EVs after the collapse of his first venture, Fisker Automotive. Backed by a public SPAC listing in 2020, the company was valued at nearly $3 billion and promised to bring affordable, design-driven EVs to market.

Its first and only production model, the Fisker Ocean SUV, entered deliveries in 2023. While praised for its design and environmental branding, the Ocean quickly ran into trouble: software bugs, recalls, build-quality issues, and poor after-sales support. Customer confidence eroded, and cash flow dried up.

By early 2024, Fisker struggled to raise funds, with a potential partnership with another automaker collapsing. The company was delisted from the NYSE and left with mounting losses. On June 17, 2024, Fisker Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, listing up to $1 billion in assets and hundreds of millions in debt.

This marked the second collapse of a Fisker EV venture. Despite bold design and ambitious promises, Fisker Inc. ultimately failed to deliver a sustainable business model—leaving the Ocean as its sole legacy and customers facing an uncertain future.
